What Is Diabetes? A Simple Guide

You’ve probably heard people talk about diabetes before, but a lot of people still don’t really know what it actually is.

Basically, diabetes is a condition that affects the way your body handles sugar. When you eat food, your body turns a lot of it into glucose, which is a type of sugar your body uses for energy. Normally, a hormone called insulin helps move that sugar into your cells so your body can use it.

But with diabetes, that process doesn’t work correctly.

Sometimes the body doesn’t make enough insulin, and other times it can’t use insulin properly. When that happens, sugar stays in the bloodstream instead of being used for energy.

There are different types of diabetes, but the two main ones are Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 usually happens because the immune system attacks insulin-producing cells. Type 2 is more common and often develops over time because of genetics, lifestyle habits, or insulin resistance.

Some common symptoms include:

  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Being super thirsty
  • Going to the bathroom a lot
  • Blurry vision
  • Slow healing cuts

Even though diabetes is serious, millions of people live normal lives with it by managing their food, exercise, stress, and medication.
